Abstract

ABSTRACT The film Leafie: A Hen into the Wild highlights the relationship between Leafie, a hen, and Greenie, a duck, as a mother and son. The storyline revolves around their struggles to have a healthy relationship as they come from different species. The writer analyzes the film using a psychological approach to understand Leafie’s parenting styles and struggles as she raises Greenie. The writer uses Baumrind’s parenting styles theory to analyze the extracted data. This qualitative research thesis uses the film as the primary data source. From the analysis, the writer found a few traits displayed by Leafie’s parenting styles. She displays high levels of communication, trust in her child and a bit of control. Leafie is a vocal individual and has an open communication with her child; hence, she shows an authoritative parent trait. In terms of trust, she explicitly trusts Greenie to wander and play around. This is also a trait of authoritative parents. On the other hand, Leafie has a tight control on when and where Greenie can play, for he must not stray far from her. In contrast with the authoritative parental traits that the writer has mentioned, she displays a trait of an authoritarian parent. In the matter of raising her child, Leafie struggles to raise Greenie due to his anger, which stems from his early childhood experience and her oblivion to her species difference. She also faces challenges during Greenie’s rebellious streak, where he expresses his frustrations and anger toward his mother.
