Abstract
This research is conducted to find out the ethnic identity of Rachel Chu in the Crazy Rich Asians novel. In this research, the researcher uses the theory of Kennedy and Hall (2006) about ethnic identity. The research method used is the qualitative method. The researcher uses thirteen ethnic identity indicators proposed by Kennedy and Hall (2006) to analyze Rachel Chu’s character. The five indicators shown by Rachel Chu are the physical representation of the culture, the cultural life views, preference for food of the particular origin, language of the culture used at home, and selecting a spouse from the same ethnic background or wanting children to marry a partner from the same background. The results of the study show that in five of the thirteen indicators, Rachel Chu shows more of her ethnic identity as an American than her ethnic identity as a Chinese.
