Abstract

Characterization is one important element in narrative work, including movie. This research is related to the direct and indirect characterizations of Ruby Rossi in the CODA film. Direct characterization is done by providing straight forward characteristics of Ruby, of what the character is like. This characterization will be informed directly from the narrator, or a character in the story may do so. Indirect characterization deals with elements that reveal the personality of Ruby. Indirect characterization covers dialogue, actions, appearance, other characters, environment and background. The purpose of this research is to discuss Ruby's characterizations directly and indirectly. The results of this study show that Ruby is directly characterized as someone who is brave and has a good voice. She is also indirectly characterized as a girl who is hardworking, loving, funny, patient, brave, and self-determined. Ruby has a good voice and a sense of humor.
