Abstract

Dreamgirls directed by Bill Condon is a film about three Afro-American women who experienced double discrimination. The main characters in Dreamgirls are Effie White, Lorell Robinson, and Deena Jones. This thesis aims to find out the kind of double discrimination that happened to black people and women. Dreamgirls is fascinating as a research object because it shows discrimination that reflects things that often occur in America. This research was a qualitative method using theories on race and women’s discrimination. The data collected show that three Afro-American women deal with double discrimination in the job place. It can be seen in limited opportunities to perform and limited recognition as well as sexualized to attract the audience. The women experienced limited opportunities and recognition to be successful entertainers, for example, when the radio stations refused to play their singles because they are black. There is also discrimination against women when, in the film, the singer’s body and face are sexualized to attract white male audiences.
