Abstract

The Moana (2016) film is an example of a film that discusses women's freedom. Society often determines what women can and cannot do. As a young woman, Moana fights for her freedom to do what she wants without restrictions from anyone, as long as they are right. This thesis discusses the problems faced by Moana as a woman and the way Moana fights for her freedom. The writer chose a qualitative method to analyze the data collected from the film. The writer used the theory proposed by Fadhilah (2012) and Marzuki (2008) to identify the problems faced by Moana. Moreover, the writer used the idea by Sumana (2022) to examine how Moana fights for her freedom. Moana's problems are not confident, being weak, being distrusted by society (related to the disapproval of a woman's existence), and being considered unintelligent (related to society's underestimating of a woman's ability). Moana fights for her freedom by becoming disobedient, arguing against her father's words, fighting with actions, and using her intelligence and boldness. Moana proves that women can freely express themselves. Moana's story is an example of how women can solve their problems with the ideas they have because they are intelligent and responsible
