Abstract

Mulan film presents two special female characters, Mulan and Xianniang. In the film, Mulan and Xianniang are portrayed as women who act differently from other women in their society. They choose unusual roles, which are fighting in the war, while the other women are learning to become a good bride and bring honour by marriage. This research aims to find out the representation of the feminist traits in the heroine and female villain of Mulan film. In order to obtain data and analyse the topic, the writer used qualitative research methods. The data were taken from the Mulan film which was the primary source of this research. The writer analysed the data from Mulan’s film using Zembat’s feminism theory. In the film, Mulan and Xianniang’s character represents feminist traits through their behaviour and way of thinking. Mulan works hard to prove herself and succeeds to bring honour to her family by becoming a soldier. She also gets recognition as a woman soldier and gets an offer to join the Emperor’s guard. On the other hand, Xianniang is a woman fighter who works hard to help Bori Khan in order to prove herself. She bravely shows her power and inspires other women to freely express themselves. In the end, she becomes Mulan’s friend and sacrifices herself to help Mulan
