Abstract

This study focuses on analysing Joe Goldberg’s possessive and abusive behavior in the series You. The purpose of this research is to describe Joe’s possessive behavior towards his girlfriend, Beck and his abusive behavior. The study is a qualitative study. The data source for this study is the script of the You Series. To analyze the data, the writer used Walker’s theory on possessive behavior, Meloy’s theory on stalker, Brown’s theory on jealousy, Doron et al’s theory on obsession, and Walker’s theory on abusive behavior. Based on the data collected, it was found that Joe’s possessive behavior is portrayed through his actions as being a stalker, having jealous feelings, and obsessional personality. In the series, Joe stalked Beck and Peach physically, and cyberstalked Beck, Benji and Peach. Joe’s jealousy towards Benji and Peach is both simple and complex. Joe is also having an obsessional personality, in which he has imaginative thoughts and fantasies about Beck. Moreover, Joe is also abusive. He attacks Beck, Benji and Peach verbally and physically. Joe verbally attacks the victims, which affect them psychologically, as well as physically attacks the victims so that they get injured physically.
