Abstract

This thesis, titled The Life Conflicts of Nick Vujicic in his Biography Life Without Limits and the Purposes of Writing It, takes the biography of Nick Vujific as the object of analysis. It aims to find out the various conflicts faced by Nick, an individual with special needs, and how he deals with them, and then to describe his purposes of writing the book. Applying a formalistic approach and therefore relying on a close reading on the object of analysis and by focusing on the literary intrinsic elements, namely conflict, this thesis finds out that the character, Nick, faces various conflicts. Inner conflicts occur first, when Nick feels rejection, a circumstance that makes him feel guilty and worthless, and second, when Nick questions God about his imperfect creation. The man versus man conflict occurs between Nick and his school friends bullying him; the man versus nature conflict occurs when Nick has to leave Australia and moves to the USA, a migration that brings emotional and cultural issues in his life; and the last man versus society conflict which occurs when Nick, by the regulation, should enter a special need school while his parents want to him to enter public school. His purposes of writing this biography are first, to convince people that each of them has a great life purpose; second to build awareness of those having special needs, including their parents, that they have to be able to face reality, third, that with his five characteristics, Nick could become an inspiration for many people about not easily giving up in their life struggles.
