Abstract

A ritual believed by the Javanese people to remove bad luck and incidents are called Ruwatan Sukerta. This study attempts to understand the meaning and the elements involved in Ruwatan Sukerta in Yogyakarta. To collect data on this ritual, the researcher interviewed the puppeteer and expert of the Javanese Ruwatan Sukerta for Yogyakarta, and some of the participants in the ritual. She also took part in the observation of the ritual at the time. The researcher found out that Ruwatan Sukerta in Yogyakarta is a traditional ritual that is used to ask for prosperity, and welfare which gives an impact for the people of Java, so it is still maintained in Java tradition. This ritual research is found also to mostly be performed by Javanese people for the particular reason, that is a way of expressing gratitude for the good life received by the Java people. In conducting this ritual, the research also found the importance of the puppeteer, who functions as the key performance needed to prepare the offerings for the Ruwatan Sukerta ceremony. In the procession of the Ruwatan sukerta ritual in D.I. Yogyakarta, the rules and regulations are determined by the organizer, the Cultural Preservation Centre (BPNB). Ruwatan Sukerta ritual is a tradition that still gives an impact on the people of Java.
