Abstract

Charactonym is a naming technique that requires special attention in translating and interpreting the name or characteristics of a character. This undergraduate thesis discusses the charactonym employed in beast characters in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Original Screenplay, which begins with finding the traits and abilities of each beast. There are two main problem formulations: (1) the distinctive traits found in J. K. Rowling’s Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: Original Screenplay represented by the names of beasts, and (2) the use of charactonyms based on the beasts’ traits. The methods used are; classify magical animals based on the beasts’ ability class in the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them book, suggest their special characteristics, and then look for the charactonym for each character based on the theory put forward by Kalashnikov. The study found four out of eight charactonym based on the beasts’ trait and ability: expressive-and-characteristic names, e.g. Demiguise, Murtlap, Swooping Evil, Thunderbird, and Erumpent; expressive names, e.g. Occamy, Niffler, Mooncalf and Billywig; anthroponyms with common stem, e.g. Bowtruckle; and intersemantizating names, e.g. Graphorn.
