Abstract

The movement to Memasyarakatkan Makan Ikan (GEMARIKAN) is one of the efforts initiated by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries to build individual and community nutrition awareness so that people like to consume fish. This campaign was welcomed by the community and several regions in Indonesia. Because, Indonesia is a province with the lowest number 2 fish consumption in Indonesia. Kendal Regency is the base of Islamic Boarding Schools. There are 245 Islamic Boarding Schools with various sizes and 29,140 santri. Thus Islamic Boarding Schools contribute 3% of the population of the entire Kendal Regency population. This study aims to determine whether there are differences in eating fish based on the proximity of the location of Islamic Boarding Schools to the coast and the size of the Islamic Boarding Schools scale, as well as the diversity of fish consumed by santri located in coastal and noncoastal areas. This research is important because as a Maritime Country, Indonesia is a country with low consumption of fish, with 43.94 kilograms per capita per year. The method of data collection was done using the help of a questionnaire then the researcher continued with data analysis. In this study 60 samples of Islamic Boarding Schools were used, each of which consisted of 30 Islamic Boarding Schools located in coastal and non-coastal areas. Based on data analysis, it can be concluded that (1) The location of the proximity of Islamic Boarding Schools to the beach does not affect the level of fish consumption of the santri. Islamic Boarding Schools that located in noncoastal areas actually have a higher level of fish consumption than Islamic Boarding Schools in coastal areas. (2) The size of Islamic Boarding Schools influences the level of fish consumption. The higher the scale of Islamic Boarding Schools, the higher the level of consumption of fish. (3) Islamic Boarding Schools located in coastal areas are higher in consuming fresh fish, processed/salted/preserved fish, fish-based spices, and fish-based side dishes. (4) Islamic Boarding Schools located in non-coastal areas are higher in consuming shrimp groups and finished fish (ready to eat). (5) Islamic Boarding Schools in coastal and non-coastal areas, both small and high scale, consume more sea water and freshwater fish than brackish water fish.
