Abstract

This study is conducted to find out about the hedges used in soft and hard science, the two major branches of science that has opposite character. Soft science is considered to deal with social fields of study while hard science is related to natural fields of study. The writer analyzed the use of hedges in the two corpora. The data of this research were collected from sixty introduction sections of research articles of both soft and hard science that were published from three different international journals. This is a mixed method study as it mixed descriptive quantitative method and also qualitative method. The writer also used AntConc application to help her in counting the number of hedges used in the data analysis. After examining the data, the results show that soft science field used more hedges than hard science field. The results also show that the uses of hedges in the two fields are similar.
