Abstract

Women are stereotypically believed to be domestic beings. However, women actually can go traveling, an activity related to men’s activity, to get new experiences in their lives. In this thesis, I discuss the experiences and challenges shared by Indonesian women travel writers in The Naked Traveler Anthology (2014). It is a collection of Indonesian women travelers’ stories during their travel. From the analysis I found that the experiences they shared are varied such as shopping, culinary tourism, walking around the town, enjoying the scenery, surfing, learning local culture, and meeting new people. From all the experiences I found, there was only one which is stereotypical women’s activity; it is shopping. Then, the challenges I found in the book are language barrier, travel anxiety, budgeting, lacking of direction, different habit and scam. Those were common challenges which could be experienced by both women and men. Thus, none of the challenges is stereotypical.
