Abstract
Herding the Wind is a retelling of the Ramayana story. The story is about Rama, who is banished in the forest, and Sinta, his wife, who is always by his side at every stage of life. One significant event occurs when Sinta is kidnapped by Rahwana in Alengka and is awaiting Rama's rescue. Although Sinta is the major character, she is always second to Rama, her husband, and this makes Sinta a good woman. As a result, the goals of this study are to discover Sinta's characteristics in the novel Herding the Wind and to analyse what makes Sinta a good Hindu woman. Sinta's qualities were explored utilising a qualitative research design and Mukherjee's theory of a good woman in Hinduism. Physical and non-physical characteristics are distinguished. The physical characteristics are beautiful, fertile, and chaste. Non- physical characteristics include being honest, faithful, forgiving, comforting, patient, submissive, sacrificial, and spiritual. The result showed that Sinta possesses physical and non-physical characteristics that are characteristic of a decent Hindu woman.
