Abstract
Deixis is a very common phenomenon in language, whether oral or written language. Deixis is defined as an act of pointing through language. Many studies have been done to analyze deictic expressions in various media. This qualitative study aims to analyze the use of person and social deixis in The Duchess, a period movie released in 2008. The data for the research were collected from the movie script and then analyzed based on Levinson’s theory. From the data analysis, the writer found 564 occurrences of first- person deixis, 451 occurrences of second-person deixis, and 395 occurrences of third- person deixis. As for the relational social deixis, there are six types of relational social deixis appearing in this study. They are proper nouns, tu/vous pronouns, titles, occupational titles, terms of endearment, kinship terms. In regard to absolute social deixis, the writer found the use of absolute social deixis from the movie.
