Abstract
Indonesian children mostly are active users of online social media. However, they are easily influenced by false information or fake news (hoaxes). The spreading of hoaxes (deceptive news, false assertions) has threatened the Indonesian principle of unity in diversity and destroyed the capacity building of Indonesian children. In order to prevent children becoming the victims or perpetrators of hoaxes, it is very important to give them knowledge of and ways to identify false information. Giving children the right information is a right of the children that is guaranteed by the Indonesian Children Protection Act 2014. Children have the right to obtain the accurate information rather than false information and this right must be fulfilled, but fake news/hoaxes are rampant in Indonesia, with the dissemination of false information able to affect the lives of children and society more generally. In the study reported here, the method used to equip children with the knowledge and skills necessary to distinguish between genuine information and hoaxes or fake news was a service learning (learning by doing) program that introduce them to an understanding hoaxes, types of hoaxes, legal aspects of hoaxes, literacy involved to detect them, and the anti-hoax movement. The study involved training the trainers (university students), and then those trainers implementing training at a senior secondary level, with measurements taken via questionnaires pre and post intervention to determine the effectiveness of the module and its delivery to students at 4 secondary schools.
