Abstract
This paper discusses online petition as one of new social movements. This social movement is characterized by the use of Internet technology as a major tool of struggle. Specifically, the authors chose to elaborate Change.org as a site that provides an online petition platform. Through the site, everyone can digitally collect signatures as many as possible in order to support their struggle. The collected signatures are then given to relevant parties, both the actor and the policy maker, to resolve the public issues they are demanding. In particular the authors seek to explore environmental discourse as a critical issue that are being experienced by nearly all regions of the world. Halliday's social semiotics were used to analyze the introductory contents of the demands they made through Change.org website. The analysis was performed using three situational context analyses: field of discourse, tenor of discourse, and mode of discourse.
