Abstract
There are previous studies about the choice of request strategies differ between male and female. One of them is, a study from Clarke & Cass (1999) found that girls prefer used indirect request than boys. The aim of this study is to examine choices of request strategies that students in Faculty of Language and Arts used based on their gender. The participants are 83 students in Faculty of language and Arts who have taken Functional Speaking Communication class. The researcher obtains the data by distributing Discourse Completion Tests (DCT). There are 12 situations designs based on different power relation and social distance. The researcher uses qualitative method to analyze this study. The result shows both students use conventionally indirect request strategies, yet female students use preparatory strategy more often than male students do.
