Abstract
This thesis conducts an analysis of lexical and structural ambiguities in news titles of Suara Merdeka newspaper. In this modern era, there are many newspapers which contain news colloquial or newspaper styles in which people rarely can interpret what the newspaper is trying to tell or inform. This often happens especially in the titles. This research aims to find out which titles are lexically and structurally ambiguous throughout June and July 2013 editions, the most dominant type of ambiguity in the newspaper, and the way the potential readers interpret the ambiguous titles by distributing questionnaire to the students of Faculty of Language and Arts. Throughout these two-month editions, the writer found 29 titles that are lexically ambiguous and 5 titles that are structurally ambiguous. This study results that lexical ambiguity is more frequently appeared than structural ambiguity. Although the titles are lexically and structurally ambiguous, 75 percent of the respondents can interpret them in the right way in accordance with what the newspaper was trying to inform
