Abstract

Compliment is a part of daily conversations. Compliment is used to show solidarity, or as a reward for someone who has done something good, or to increase motivation in someone’s jobs. Compliment has a lot of meanings and purposes based on people’s needs. Every person may have different ways to give and accept responses depending on situations and maybe also the purposes of giving and accepting compliments. In this research, the writer is interested in doing a comparative research on compliments in American and Indonesian movies.“The Pursuit of Happyness” and “Rumah Tanpa Jendela” using qualitative analysis by adopting Yu’s theory of compliments. The researcher found that there are some similarities and differences in the way people give responses to the compliment in to the two movies used in this study and show the cultural influences
