Abstract

Around the World in Eighty Days is one of Jules Verne passion of traveling beside his book Five Weeks in Balloon. The book was set in 18th century when British have many colonies in Asia. Verne also set a character that match to the situation at that time. A gentleman that was rich, sociable and smart, typical of gentleman at that time although he was not a noble. It is Philleas Fogg, the main character of the novel that challenged by his friends at the Reform Club to do a journey around the world in eighty days with a wager of twenty thousand pounds. He traveled to the four continents that started from Europe to Africa then Asia and the last one was America. While he was busy with the calculation of time and administrative things, his servant, Passerpartout that has nothing to think about beside his master needs, has chances to see the beautiful view and culture in the country or city they visited especially when they were in Asia. This thesis, entitled “The Images of Asia in Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days” has two points of analysis according to the culture and lifestyle of Asian that the characters able to see on their journey. First, to find and analyze the images that the characters able to see during their journey. Second, analyzing in how they could get the images. The approach which is used to analyze the novel is post colonialism. Post colonialism is the study of the interactions between European nations and the societies they colonized in the modern period. The analysis will emphasize in the way both orient and occident see each other in the novel. The result of this analysis shows that the images of Asia were something that is made by the westerner at that time. Those images can be positive and negative. The superiority and the passion to civilize the Asian, of the British also gave contribution to the images.
