Abstract
Metaphor is a figurative language which has multiple meanings. The multiple meanings cause difficulty in translation, moreover it is not habitual usage for foreign language learners. There are two main problems that cause difficulties in metaphor translation. First, there are difficulty factors influenced in translating metaphorical expressions naturally and communicatively. Second, there are types of metaphors that cause problems in metaphor translation. Due to these problems, this research is conducted in order to find out difficulty factors in translating metaphorical expressions and which types of metaphors that cause problem in translation by using descriptive method. There are some steps for achieving the purpose. The first step is collecting English texts data from Reader’s Digest in which those data are metaphorical expressions. After that, the texts are translated into Indonesian by using appropriate dictionary. Third, the data are applied into multiple choice tests. Fourth, the researcher identified the difficulty factors in metaphor translation. Then the results are used in closed questionnaire. Last, the researcher analyzes the results of the tests and closed questionnaire which are made into percentage for knowing the difficulty factors in metaphor translation and the types of metaphors that cause problem in translating metaphorical expressions. Based on the closed questionnaire, the results show that limitation of knowledge factor is on the first place that predominantly makes metaphor translation difficult. This condition is caused by the lack of knowledge of vocabulary background related to cultural background and the multiple meanings of words. Thus, there is misconception of the text and mistranslation may happen. And from the tests, the results indicate that container and orientational metaphors are difficult to be translated naturally because it is influenced by the lack of vocabulary and language ambiguity. Generally, the learners translate both types literally; therefore the messages of the text are different from the source language.
