Abstract

Mastering and knowing well the strategies of explaining difficult words are very significant to help the teachers to explore the competence and basic skills of the students who join the class discussion especially speaking class. It is important and needed since there are still many students who need to produce more English words actively in order to improve their speaking ability. From that reason, the writer is interested in observing what strategies may be used in the classrooms taught by two English-speaking teachers. It is to see the classrooms’ activities and students’ interaction. Of course, the class interaction was made naturally so that it create lively dialogues between the teachers and the students. The data of this study were taken from the dialogues occuring in two classes. Each class was taught by different teachers who explored their strategies to explain difficult words to make the students who joined their classes easily understood the lessons. The dialogues which created the conversations among the participants of the classes were recorded then transcribed. Later the data were classified into some categories of strategies and were analyzed based on the theory of the strategies used to explain difficult words. The results show that the students were too shy in producing more English words to guess and catch the correct meaning of the difficult words meant by the English-speaking teachers during the conversations of each class’s interaction. However, the first class taught by English-speaking teacher 1 has shown that the students were more active and enthusiastic in guessing the difficult words mentioned by teacher 1. Moreover, the exploration of the strategies used to explain difficult words was easier for teacher 1 when compared with what happened in the second class.
