Abstract

There is a tendency that swear words become common among male students of the Faculty of Letters Soegijapranata Catholic University Semarang. The swear words become common because the students usually swear in their daily conversations. In fact, students use them when joking with their friends. Therefore, the writer was interested in observing the use of swear words by the male students of the Faculty of Letters and the topics that could trigger their use. In this research, the data were taken from some conversations among male students of Faculty of Letters. Those conversations were recorded and then, were transcribed. After that, the data were grouped and analyzed based on the objectives of the swearing. The results of the research showed that the Faculty of Letters students used swear words in order to express their feelings, such as anger and surprise in their daily informal conversations. Besides, they used swear words when joking with their friends to make the situations relaxing. In this research, the writer found that close relationship could affect the use of swear words. The topics which could trigger the use of swear words were also analyzed by the writer. Based on the research, the male students swore in various topics in their daily conversations. They used swear words with their close friends and thus, the use of swear words became something common. When swear words occurred, the conversations still flowed smoothly because the listener did not feel offended.
