Abstract
Language is a means of communication. Language is used by human beings as a tool to communicate to one another. Human beings use language to convey message, idea, feeling, and wish. The research purpose is to see how the floutings of the maxims happen in chating (a comedy show). The results of this research help the readers understand that floutings often happen in conversation. The data were taken from one of the TV shows (TPI) which named chating. Chating is a comedy show. It is broadcasted at 9 PM every Sunday. The writer recorded ten episodes of chating as the data, then transcribed it into written form. The writer also added the context and the situation that happened in that show. The result of research showed that the actors of chating did many floutings to the Gricean’s maxims. The floutings which appear in this study are: the flouting of the quality maxim, quantity maxim, relevance maxim, and manner maxim. The most frequent flouting happens on quality maxim. The less frequent flouting happens on relevance maxim. All floutings are created by actors to create live situation and to make the story more attractive
