Abstract
Switching between two or more languages in the same conversation is a common phenomenon. In the Faculty of Letters, both the lecturers and the students often switch from English to Indonesian language. They apply code switching and code mixing inside or outside the class. In this study, the writer is interested to find out the reasons the teachers and the students apply code switching in the classroom. In this study, the writer limits only the code switching in the speaking one class. The writer only limits the switching from Indonesian to English or English to Indonesian language in speaking class. From the analysis, the writer finds that the code switching applied by the teacher in the classroom is categorized as the situational code switching. This situational code switching is characterized by the use of English to give a formal lesson to the students, but the discussion sometimes is followed by Indonesian. They use one language in one situation and different language in another situation. Code switching itself has several functions that show the reasons of the teacher in applying them in the classroom. Based on the related theories and the interview, the writer is able to draw a conclusion that there are seven reasons of the teacher in applying the code switching within the conversation in the classroom.
