Abstract
Novel is one of the genres of literature work, which can present a reflection from the real life of human beings. Novel can give the thought and new point of view about the condition of human being’s country in history, politics, social, and economic. Possessing the Secret of Joy is Alice Walker’s greatest novel in which she shows about the major character’s experience in genital mutilation or female circumcision. Possessing the Secret of Joy tells the life of Tashi, an African American woman who comes from America. She tells readers her psychological and mentally depressed condition. Because of female circumcision she finally murders M’Lissa the circumciser of Olinka village.. In writing the thesis, the writer uses the sociological approach because it portrays on the social condition of the Africa and American culture. People of Olinka village believed that a girl must be circumcised in order to be accepted as a real woman. In America, this culture is an optional duty for the African-American people. Alice Walker, the author of Possessing the Secret of Joy, uses Tashi, the victim of female circumcision, is a symbol of African-American woman’s struggle against the unfair condition.
