Abstract
ABSTRACT This thesis aimed at investigating the students' views and preferences towards the two sets of grammar teaching approaches, i.e. deductive and inductive. The main focus of the research is firstly to offer an inductive approach as an alternative to the existing one. Secondly, to explore the students' overall attitudes towards the alternative approach and thirdly, to find out which approach is considered more accommodative to their needs and expectation either within the formal classroom-setting or in self-study. The research comprises of a pilot ·· test, questionnaire administration, interview with the grammar class teachers, and observation. The result indicated that out or 4 I respondents, the majority preferred both approaches to be applied interchangeably. This view underlaid the importance of the combination of deductive and inductive approaches to accommodate the various needs and characteristics of al students. However, the students' main preferences still fell on the advantage or deductive approach when they were given two extreme options in which they had to choose between the two approaches. from the interview, it as discovered that the teachers acknowledged the importance of inductive approach in the teaching activities. In addition, it was also obvious that students still relied heavily on teachers and classroom learning without realizing the importance of self-study and practice outside class.
