Abstract
Loanwords are words which are adopted from another language because the target language does not have the equivalent word to determine the meaning. Loanwords which are derived from English are frequently used in the mass media. Based on their interpretation of loanwords they hear or read from the mass media, daily conversation, or any other language contact media many people correctly use and translate the tested loanword, yet, some of them mistranslate the words. The students of Faculty of Letters Soegijapranata University are students who have an advance education of English language, so it is expected that they are supposed to know the real meaning of the English words, including the loanwords derived from English. The aim of this research is to find out how the students of 2003 academic year at Faculty of letters Soegijapranata Catholic University translate the tested loanwords, and also to find out whether their correct interpretation to the tested loanwords lead them to translate the words correctly or not.The participants of this research are 30 students of 2003 academic year at Soegijapranata Catholic University who have taken Translation 1 and Translation 2. The method of data collection used in this research is questionnaire. The data analysis technique used in this research in frequency distribution. It is used to count the number of the students misinterpret and mistranslate the tested loanword. It is also used to count the number of the students who correctly interpret the words but incorrectly translate the words, and the language contact media from where those students hear or read the words. The result of the data analysis shows that in average, only 44.05 % of the respondents interpret the tested loanwords correctly. Also, 77.75 % of the respondents mistranslate the tested loanwords. Regarding the disiyncronous it can be concluded that the students are confused and hesitated in defining the real meaning of the words which then may create mistranslation. Another finding is that the students’ correct interpretation of the tested loanwords do not always lead them to translate the words correctly. The finding in this research showed that most of the students who are correctly interpret the tested loanwords did not always translate the words correctly. Most of those students heard or read the tested loanwords from TV and daily conversation than from the journal or book.
