Abstract

Film as one of the forms of storytelling is different from its counterparts. Seeing it involves aspects that others do not have such as visual and audio, it can take advantage of them as a tool to support its story, giving it more layers or complexities. In this thesis, the main discussion is the use of visuals in terms of making implicit meanings that are connected to the story, specifically the use of color. This thesis used Blue is the Warmest Colour as its main subject and Patti Bellatoni’s theory of color in visual storytelling as its ground theory of the research which explains the use of color and the meaning behind certain color choices in relation to the context of the story. Blue is the Warmest color tells a story about the journey of a woman named Adèle in finding her true identity and her relationship with a woman named Emma who introduced her new experiences. This thesis examined the use of color and how it plays part in creating meaning by selecting several major scenes of the film. The analysis of the selected scenes is sorted in chronological order and stage by stage in order to find out how the colors help Blue is the Warmest Colour tell its story.
