Abstract

Indonesia is a country which is rich in cultures, tribes, and local languages. Indonesia also has many various rituals from various regions. One of the various rituals is the Tiwah ritual. The Tiwah ritual is a kind of funeral that Dayaknese performs in Central Kalimantan. The Tiwah ritual is great and has several kinds. This study attempts to explain and understand the kinds of Tiwah rituals in Tumbang Tarusan villages, Katingan, Central Kalimantan. This study also attempts to explain and understand the Tiwah ritual’s categories based on Dhavamony’s theory. To collect data on this ritual, the researcher interviewed three pisors (people who usually lead the ritual) and a Hindu Kaharingan religion teacher. The researcher also did library research on the internet to collect the data. The researcher found out that the Tiwah ritual has three kinds, namely the Tiwah Jandau, the Tiwah Telu Andau, and the Tiwah Uju Andau. The researcher also found out the categories of the Tiwah ritual based on Dhavamony’s theory is a ritual which associates with mystical power, a cult of ancestors, social relationships, productivity, strength, purification, and protection
