Abstract

Dance is a way of human expression through movements. It is a sequence of movements, that is, someone moving his body. Dance represents culture, emotions, or even tells stories. Bidu is one of the original dances from Viqueque district. This study focuses on the gestures and meanings of the dance owned by the Viqueque community in Timor Leste, called Bidu Dance. The study is a qualitative study in which the data were obtained through interviews. From the data collected through the interview it can be concluded that the meaning of gestures in Bidu dance is related to the existence of women. Gesture is one of nonverbal communications that human beings might use to communicate. The gestures in Bidu dance are hand smooth gesture, leg moves gesture, and body twisting gesture. The beauty of this dance can be seen from the gestures made by the dancers when they are performing. The hand smooth gesture shows that women have the right and freedom to choose what she wants to choose in her life. The foot gesture represents the strength of women, while the body twist gestures are interpreted as women with discipline and tolerance.
