Abstract

The Prince and the Pauper, the first historical fiction by American writer, Mark Twain tells about the story of two young boys who were born on the same day and have identical appearance. This study aims to find out the characters and their characterizations in the novel The Prince and the Pauper by Mark Twain. This study uses formalist approach in order to analyze the characters and their characterizations in The Prince and the Pauper. From the data collected, the writer found that Twain includes two major characters – Tom Canty and Edward Tudor – whose appearance is identical yet have different traits. Tom is a boy who is naive, imaginative, curious, diligent, aspiring, streetwise, and smart, but is miserable, while Edward is a little arrogant but is an honest boy. Twain also includes a few minor characters – John Canty, Gammer Canty, Mrs. Canty, Bet and Nan, Miles Hendon – in which each character has different traits, including their character types – round or flat. The writer also found the characterizations of each character that Twain includes in the story
