Abstract

Ritual is a traditional practice which exists in almost all cultures. It communicates beliefs, thoughts, values and ideas that are believed by a certain group of people. The first aim of this study is to understand what Lomban ritual is including the procedures, activities, and participants in the ritual. Then, the second part is an attempt to describe the symbolic meanings of ritual offerings performed by the fishermen from the village of Bandungharjo, Jepara, Central Java. In order to obtain research data, the researcher interviewed several fishermen in the village. The researcher also had the opportunity to participate in the ritual along with the fishermen and the residents. This research reveals that the Lomban ritual is intended to express gratitude for the abundance of blessings given by God and the sea for the fishermen, and to entertain the residents in Bandungharjo. To express gratitude to God and the sea, the fishermen prepared offerings in the form of goat's head and legs, coconut, snacks, porridge, chili, shallot, shrimp paste, yellow rice, jugs, bananas and ketupat. These offerings have a special meaning for the fishermen and locals. For example, the meanings of bananas are fertility, prosperity and abundance, while yellow rice means a gratitude to God who has given abundance of blessings and wealth. The Lomban ritual is a tradition that makes a good impact for the fishermen and people in Bandungharjo, Jepara.
