Abstract

Iwan Fals is one of the most famous singers in Indonesia. He uses his songs to portray social problems happening in Indonesia, especially about the inequality experienced by the proletariat. This study focuses on finding the social inequalities experienced by the proletariat in Iwan Fals’ songs and aims to find the meaning of Iwan Fals’ songs and how those songs talk about the inequality experienced by the proletariat. The writer singled out Oemar Bakri, Sarjana Muda, and Sore Tugu Pancoran songs as the research applied Marxist theory to analyze the data using qualitative method. The results of this study show through his songs, Iwan Fals shows the existence of the proletariat social class represented by a teacher who is underpaid by the state, a university graduate who struggles to find a job, and a small boy who sacrifices his childhood to work for a living. The songs also show the inequalities experienced by the proletariat in that they are owned and exploited as means of production by the bourgeoisie, experiencing terrible working environments, having low awareness of human rights, and having obligations to obey the bourgeoisie’s rules. Those inequalities are mostly caused by economic factor with some political reasons behind it.
