Abstract

Subtitle is part of the translation field which translates spoken texts (SL) into written texts on the movie screen. It is not an easy job because unlike translation in literature works, subtitles have certain limitations on the character and space to provide readable texts on the screen. The level of difficulty in subtitling would be higher especially in translating complex sentences, consequently, translation strategy is needed. The purpose of the study is investigating what and how strategies are applied in Charlie and The Chocolate Factory subtitle translation. Qualitative analysis was used to answer the research questions. The result of the study confirms Schjoldager's theory (2008); it shows that subtitle translators used 6 strategies namely oblique translation, direct translation, paraphrase, deletion, addition, and condensation strategies to help translating English complex sentences into Indonesian.
