Abstract

This study belongs to Applied Linguistics. The objectives of this study were to find out the attitudes of the students of English Department of Faculty of Language and Arts in Soegijapranata Catholic University towards the use of English jokes in lecture and the effects that occurred in the lectures. The writer used mixed methods research involving the use of qualitative and quantitative data in doing this study. This study was conducted in October to November 2019. The participants of this research were the students of fourth-sixth semester of Faculty of Language and Arts in Soegijapranata Catholic University batches 2017-2018. The information and the data of this study were taken from questionnaire and interview. The result showed that students' attitude toward the use of English jokes in lecture is positive. Students agreed that having jokes in lectures, as long as the jokes are relevant to the lesson materials will be beneficial. At last, jokes related to the materials can be an alternative method in lecturing which creates an enjoyable atmosphere so that students can learn better.
