Abstract

Virginity is a presumption to someone who has never had sex. In Indonesia, especially in Semarang, people use virginity as a parameter to measure whether a woman is good or bad. Then, people start to judge is a woman still virgin or not and stereotypes of virginity such as getting fatter, have a big breast, waddling gait, have distinctive shoulders, wider hips, bad scents, colored hair, and wearing sexy clothes have appeared. Therefore, in this research the writer attempts to find out the stereotypes of adolescent people in Semarang related to virginity. The type of the study was qualitative research. The writer uses the theory of sexuality and adolescents in Indonesia and the theory of stereotypes of virginity. In order to collect the data to answer the research question, the writer did interview to adolescents in Semarang about what stereotypes of virginity they know and their response to those stereotypes. This research reveals that there are two kinds of stereotypes; physical appearances stereotypes and behavior stereotypes. Nowadays people tend to not care about someone’s appearances which was correlated with their virginity. Nevertheless, behavior stereotypes seem still exist for people still gossiping woman and their behavior.
