Abstract
No one denies the importance of water for living beings. In addition to nurture physical wellbeing, water in many cultures bears spiritual aspects. Water forms culture and conveys symbolic meanings to life. It represents threat/death and life at the same time. It represents purifications in many rituals, death and threat, but also new life in many narratives. Water accompanies human beings since they grow in mother’s womb to the time when they are buried. This research attempts to find out the folklore related to water bodies (spring, river, lake, well), termed waterlore, located in Semarang, Central Java. It finds out that Senjoyo Spring in Salatiga is attached to Joko Tingkir legends. It is also regarded as a place having magical power. Rawa Pening lake in Salatiga is also accompanied by an etiological tale, Baru Klinting. Toyibah Spring in Ungaran is considered as a sacred place with healing power for disease. Java is certainly rich water-related folklore, and further research could delve more into water-lore of the Javanese people by having more decent methodology of collecting research data.
