Abstract
As a form of words or phrases that cannot be defined separately, idioms are commonly misinterpreted. This research was conducted to comprehend the understanding of English idiomatic expression meaning adapted from a movie. The study had a discussion on (1) classifying types of idioms which appear in a movie and (2) describing how well context help students on defining unknown idiom. Qualitative and quantitative methods were applied in this study. The qualitative method came first to analyze the data of idiomatic expressions taken from Captain America: Civil War movie. The qualitative data was completed with support from Makkai‟s theory and a peer review from a native. The result of qualitative data was a classification with 10 phrasal verb idioms, 6 tournure idioms, and 4 phrasal compound idioms. Quantitative method was conducted next in purpose to form questionnaires fulfilled with previous data of idiomatic expressions. The questionnaires itself were tested to students in purpose to have the new data of revealing idiom meaning with and without context clues. The writer analyzed the quantitative data by estimating possible ways that students did, thought, and correlated the idiomatic expression meaning with any helpful clues in context. In addition, students mostly had good understanding of phrasal verb idioms and phrasal compound idioms with and without context help. The understanding percentage of both types showed above 60%. On the other side, students got low understanding below 60% on tournure idioms with and without context, especially at “put a few miles on his soul” and “draw a crowd”.
