Abstract
The objective of the study is to know the kinds of refusal strategies that are commonly used by students in the Faculty of Language and Arts Soegijapranata Catholic University. The data were analyzed based on Beebe et al.'s refusal strategies (1990). Refusal strategies are categorized into three main categories: direct refusal strategies, indirect refusal strategies and adjuncts to refusal. The data were taken from 60 students in Faculty of Language and Arts Soegijapranata Catholic University batch 2015. In this research, the writer used eight situations in Discourse Completion Test (DCT) from Jalilifar (2009). The kinds of refusal strategies that students used were 12 strategies out of 14 strategies: they are Direct Performative, Direct Non Performative, Expression of Excuse, Statement of Alternative, Attempt to Dissuade Interlocutor, Statement of Regret, Wish, Promise of Future Acceptance, Statement of Principle, and Adjuncts to Refusal. The students were more indirect in expressing refusals. Among the indirect strategies the most dominant strategy used by students was Statement Regret. Keywords: refusal strategies, direct strategies, indirect strategies, speech acts, politeness
