Abstract
The manufacturing industry has considerable revenue potential for the country. According to the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) the value of furniture exports amounted to US $ 2.4 billion as of January 2017. Central Java Province itself is the center of the barometer of Indonesian furniture products. In general, the furniture industry is attached to a negative stigma as a cause of forest and environmental damage. This furniture sector is assumed to only pursue profit profits from the business without paying attention to environmental sustainability. Ecolabeling is presented as a reference that has fulfilled the principles of a sustainable environment and as a proof of inheritance about an item that has a clear origin from a sustainable forest. Ecolabeling is a form of statement, assessment and accreditation given by an independent, competent, and accountable institution in terms of sustainable management of forest and environmental management. The purpose of the study was to determine the level of application of ecolabeling adoption by furniture companies in Central Java as well as the benefits derived from the adoption of ecolabeling in terms of business and the environment. The study was descriptive qualitative by using an analysis of ecolabeling adoption in furniture companies that were mandatory and voluntary by distributing questionnaires and interviews with 3 (three) furniture companies in Central Java. Based on the results of this study, ecolabeling adoption in the Central Java furniture industry has many obstacles, including the high cost of certification, a relatively long and complicated time, capital problems, human resource problems, the technology used and also marketing of furniture products. Besides that, the socialization of the importance of ecolabel for the environment is very minimal. Even though the adoption of the application of the furniture industry ecolabel in Central Java functions in the role of global competition as a foreign exchange income. Ecolabeling adoption has an impact on the production process, as well as the amount of furniture exports that also affect the country's income, and of course the company's profit. Many consider that the application of ecolabeling in Central Java is merely pursuing economic and business interests without caring for the environment, but xvii xviii in practice it is also likely to provide environmental benefits. Actually voluntary ecolabels have positive benefits for environmental sustainability, as well as to enhance the competitiveness and image of the company, and accommodate market interests. From the research that has been done, there are some recommendations first, the need for socialization of business synergy and also the environment regarding the importance of ecolabel for furniture industry companies. Second, the participation of all stakeholders (government, private sector and society) is needed for the success of ecolabel, and the third is that there must be guarantees regarding legal raw materials for the sustainability of the furniture industry sector in the future. Keywords: ecolabel, furniture industry, business, environment, business and environmental synergy
