Abstract
In the Faculty of Language and Arts, students majoring in linguistics and literature are required to conduct a study and write a thesis. In order to be able to conduct research, students need to have a good understanding of the basics of Research Methods. They need to be able to select the type of research they are planning to do and then collect and analyze data properly. This module aims to provide an overview of research methods in applied linguistics. It is a compilation of articles and chapters of numerous books on research methods in social sciences, including applied linguistics. This module consists of six chapters. Chapters 1 to 3 focus more on the general discussion of what research is and the role of theory and hypothesis in research. Chapters 4 to 6 are intended to give students more in-depth knowledge about quantitative and qualitative research. I hope that students have a better understanding of research methods and are able to make use of this module to help them design their research, collect and analyze data, as well as write their research reports. I would like to thank the writer of Research Methods module for her time and effort to make module possible. Finally, I do hope that students do benefit from this module.
