Abstract
This study is based on the Richard Taylor‘s figurative language theory towards three selected winter poems written by William Cullen Bryant. William Cullen Bryant has written 142 poems. The 15 poems are about winter. The writer only chose three poems, i.e. A Winter Piece, November, and The Snow Shower because there is a relationship among the three poems. A Winter Piece represents the condition in changes of nature toward November and The Snow Shower. This thesis finds 8 figurative languages in A Winter Piece. The figurative languages consist of 3 metaphors, 11 similes, 3 allusions, 4 apostrophes, 2 allegories, 5 personifications, 2 synecdoches, and 3 symbols. While in the November poem, there are 4 figurative languages, which consisted of 1 metaphor, 1 apostrophe, 1 personification, and 1 symbol. Lastly, in The Snow Shower, this thesis finds 4 figurative languages, which consisted of 1 metaphor, 5 similes, 2 allusions, and 2 personifications. In support of three of Bryant‘s winter poems, discussions of the figurative language make use of the characterization of the Romantic era. Therefore, it becomes logical to find that Bryant uses vocabularies, which shows a dark, gloomy, and calm situation of the winter‘s nature. Key words: A Winter Piece, November, The Snow Shower, figurative language, romantic era, William Cullen Bryant.
