Abstract

This thesis contains on an analysis of the existing use of Emotion Icon on BBM (Blackberry Messenger). The aim of this research is to analyze the use of Emotion Icon in Blackberry Messenger and to find out people’s purpose of the use of Emotion Icon. I used mixed methodology, qualitative and quantitative method. It revealed that there are 13 Emotion Icons mostly appear that are laughing, dancing, sad, big smile, smile, crying, wink, kiss, tongue out, angry, raised eyebrow, pensive, and hug out of 77. By capturing the conversation, I found some emotion icons and calculated its frequency. I interviewed the subjects (those who used emotion icons) to get their opinion why they used those emotion icons. Then, I constructed a questionnaire and distributed it to know whether the respondents’ (those who answer the questionnaire) answers were the same with the subjects’ opinions. The emotion icons were not always used based on its actual meaning. For example, smile that can be defined as a happy icon, but it used to express the user’s anger. From the result of the questionnaire, it found out that the purpose of putting emotion icon was reached because most of the respondents (more than 50%) agree with the users’ purpose except one emotion icon that was smile because only 44% of the respondents agree with the subjects’ opinion.
