Abstract

Background music scoring is one of the most crucial elements in movie production. Background music scoring has undergone many different influences and functionality throughout different eras by using Complete Guide To Film Scoring by Richard Davis as the main resource. This research specifically examines what are the background scoring’s characteristics and how it functions across the 1930s and 2010s. This research aims to find and compare each characteristic and the purpose of background music scoring. This research uses qualitative methods by analyzing the content from the selected movies, including The Wizard of Oz, La La Land, and The Greatest Showman represent each two selected decades. The findings show that in the 1930s, background music scoring applied to one purpose, intended to obscure the background noises that were coming from the older equipment that could not be removed. Meanwhile in the 2010s, background music scoring has more than just one purpose. It is intended to enhance atmosphere, character’s dialogue, blending with sound design that creates a spontaneous feeling to the audience of what is happening during the scene by using a variety of music texture, instrumental, and modern equipment. Background music scoring has always been an important part of movies ever since many decades ago, with a development of technology throughout the years, that leads to many more characteristics and variety of functions. s
