Abstract
Syawalan is a tradition that is carried out by people in various regions of Java. In Java, it is performed annually, one week after Eid-Mubarak. The name Syawalan itself comes from the Arabic language "Shawwal", which is then given the affix "an" to become Syawalan. The tradition is highly popular in Java and cannot be separated from Javanese society, especially among Muslim people. The objectives of this study are to describe the ritual procedure of the Syawalan tradition in Pekuncen Village and explain the functions of the given ritual and why people still maintain it. In this research, the writer uses interviews, observation, and documentation as methods to collect data. The research reveals that the procedures of this ritual are preparations, first step is preparing all the materials, food, and people involved. The second is to make sure that the place is ready to perform the ritual. The performance itself is to start praying with people who join the ritual. After that, start to get ready for all the air balloons. Last step, after all of the ritual performances have been done, the committees distribute food. People from various beliefs can follow and enjoy the course of this ritual without any "barriers" between them. The functions of Syawalan are teaching life values, such as, maintaining social harmony, supporting conflict resolution, entertaining people, and displaying how we should behave in social life. People maintain Syawalan ritual because people believe that it is still important preserve the culture of their ancestors. Also, this ritual teaches people, especially Muslims, to always have a fear of God. Many issues are related to different beliefs among communities, and this research reveals that the Syawalan ritual can be a suitable medium to accommodate diversity. It unites people.
