Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the gender roles played by Kim Ji Young, the main character in Kim Ji Young: born 1982 film. In this study, the writer used Simone de Beauvoir's theory to support this research. A qualitative research design was used in this study. In this film, the writer found two main roles played by Kim Ji Young, namely her roles at home and in the work environment. Kim Ji Young's role at home consists of her roles as a daughter, a wife, and a mother. The writer found that gender plays an important role in determining other people’s treatment of Kim Ji Young and the work done by Kim Ji Young in fulfilling her roles. As a daughter, she is considered less important than her brother; as a wife, she needs to obey and do the chores at home and her mother-in-law’s home; and as a mother, she needs to take care of the child. Meanwhile, at the office, because she is a woman and a mother, she is considered a less productive worker. As a result, she cannot get a promotion. In general, the study found that Kim Ji Young’s roles are determined by her gender.
