Abstract

The story of The Adding Machine tells about the life of Mr. Zero, a man who struggles to face the problems of his life. The writer takes Mr. Zero’s attitudes known as misogyny attitude as the topic of his thesis. The writer hopes that the thesis could help people to understand misogyny through a discussion of the types of misogyny attitudes and the effects of misogyny. Furthermore, people could treat women better. The writer uses Sigmund Freud’s Psychoanalytic theory to reveal the changes on Mr. Zero’s attitude. The writer finds many of Mr. Zero’s attitudes identified as misogyny based on hating his wife. He hates a woman who has similar qualities such as his wife, who always nags about everything. The writer also finds the fact that Mr. Zero likes to voyeur his neighbor, a prostitute who likes wearing her undershirt when she is at home. This shows that Mr. Zero makes women as an object to fulfill his will and fantasy. On using the theory and secondary data from many sources, the writer concludes that Mr. Zero is a misogynist.
