Abstract

The objectives of this study are to find about the characteristics of the 1920s American society, wich are portrayed in the Diamond as Big as the Ritz and then to look up how the main characters of the Diamond as Big as the Ritz portray the characteristics of the 1920s American society. This study used the sociological approach, a literary approach which tries to find out the relation between the literary work, the society and the author. The analysis shows the lifestyle and behaviour of the story characters such as having uncounted wealth, having more power because of their wealth, selfishness and would do anything to defend their wealth and having luxurious things in living a glamorous life. The lifestyle and behaviour of the characters represent the behaviour and the lifestyle of the jetzet people in the 1920s who had the same characteristic with the characters of the story. The luxurious things become the foundation of people who lived in the society.
